Need a hand with AquaLog? Email [email protected] and we'll get back to you within two business days.
When you write in, it helps to include your iPhone model, your iOS version, and the AquaLog version (Profile → scroll to the bottom).
The dive log
How do I log a dive?
Open the Journal tab and tap the + button. Only the date is required — fill in as much or as little as you like. You can record depth, bottom time, surface interval, times in and out, air pressure in and out, tank type, weight, air/surface/bottom temperature, visibility, exposure suit, conditions, your buddy, and notes.
Can I record dive table figures?
Yes. Each dive has fields for pressure group before and after, residual nitrogen time, actual bottom time, and total bottom time.
How do I add a location?
Search for a dive site by name, or drop a pin directly on the map. You can also use your current location, which asks for location permission the first time. Location is optional — the app works fine without it.
Can I switch between metric and imperial?
Yes, in Profile. The change applies to new dives; entries you already logged keep the units you logged them in, so nothing gets silently converted.
Importing and exporting
Can I bring in dives from another app?
Yes. AquaLog imports UDDF files (the standard format exported by Subsurface, MacDive, and most dive computers) and CSV files in AquaLog's own export format. Go to Journal → Import. Dives that look like ones you already have are skipped automatically, so importing the same file twice won't create duplicates.
How do I get my data out?
Export your full logbook as a CSV spreadsheet or a formatted PDF from your profile. Your dives are yours, and there's no lock-in.
Where is my data stored, and is it backed up?
Everything lives on your device — there are no accounts and no server copy. That means AquaLog is included in your normal iPhone backup (iCloud Backup or an encrypted computer backup), and restoring your phone restores your log. It also means that if you delete the app without a backup, your dives are gone. If your log matters to you, export a CSV or PDF now and then.
Species identification
How does the AI identification work?
Take a photo or choose one from your library, and AquaLog sends it to our identification service, which returns the species with its common name, scientific name, and a short summary. It needs an internet connection.
It said my photo isn't marine life.
The identifier is built for underwater subjects and will say so when a photo doesn't look like marine life. Clear, close, well-lit shots of a single animal work best. Murky water, heavy backscatter, or several animals at once make it much harder. You can always enter a species by hand instead.
It got the species wrong.
Identification is a best guess, not a determination — treat it as a starting point rather than a scientific record, and edit any sighting to correct the name.
What is the wish list?
A list of species you're hoping to encounter. Mark one as found when you finally meet it, and it moves into your collection.
Breath training
Please read this first. Breath-hold training carries a real risk of blackout, which is silent and can happen without warning. Never practice breath-holds in or near water alone. In water, always train with a qualified buddy who is watching you and knows how to respond. Do not practise while driving, swimming, or bathing. Talk to your doctor before starting if you're pregnant or have any heart, lung, blood-pressure, or seizure condition. AquaLog is a training aid, not a substitute for proper freediving instruction.
Why do I need a baseline test?
The CO2 and O2 tables are calculated from your own comfortable maximum hold, so the baseline test calibrates them to you. Without it there's nothing to build the tables from. You can rerun the baseline any time as you progress.
What's the difference between CO2 and O2 tables?
A CO2 table keeps the hold the same and shrinks the rests, training your tolerance to the urge to breathe. An O2 table keeps the rest the same and grows the holds, training your body to work with less oxygen.
Do I have to watch the screen?
No. Each round is guided by audio, so you can close your eyes and relax through the session.
Subscriptions and purchases
What does the free plan include?
A limited number of dives, sightings, and AI identifications, plus one breath session per week. The app is fully usable without paying.
What does Premium add?
Unlimited dive log entries and sightings, 30 AI identifications per month, unlimited breath sessions, the static apnea timer, and the full gallery, stats, and training guidance. Premium is available monthly or yearly, and there's a one-time Lifetime purchase that includes 50 AI identifications per month. Current prices are shown in the app before you buy.
I paid, but Premium isn't showing.
Open the upgrade screen and tap Restore Purchases. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple Account you bought with. If it still doesn't appear, email us.
How do I cancel?
Subscriptions are managed by Apple, not by us. On your iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, and cancel there. Cancelling stops the next renewal; you keep Premium until the end of the period you've paid for. The Lifetime purchase is one-time and never renews.
Can I get a refund?
Refunds are handled by Apple. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. We can't issue refunds directly, but do tell us what went wrong so we can fix it.
Privacy and your data
AquaLog has no accounts and keeps your log on your device. The full detail of what gets sent where is in our Privacy Policy.
How do I delete everything?
Deleting the app from your iPhone removes your dives, sightings, and photos along with it. Export first if you want to keep a copy.
Still stuck?
Email [email protected]. Bug reports, feature requests, and corrections to a species ID are all welcome.
